John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
At one point during our Lord's walk with His disciples he was asked, "Master, carest thou not that we perish?" There may have never been a more important question asked. At the same time, there may have never been a question that more clearly reveals man's ignorance of God's love for us!
The context of John Chapter 3 here is a conversation between our Lord Jesus and a highly educated, truly devoted, religious Hebrew named Nicodemus. Nicodemus had approached Jesus as a representative of the Hebrew religious authority. What he does know is that his religious efforts have been in vain. Jesus expresses His great love for Nicodemus by telling him that he, like all others, must be rescued from his sin! "Nicodemus, don't perish!" says Jesus. "Look to me and live!" God says to EVERY man, woman, and child, "Don't perish! I love you! Don't perish! Look to Jesus my Son and live!"
Yes, it is that simple, our selfishness has condemned us. Yet, God's love for each and every one of us has come to rescue us. Don't perish, trust Jesus and live.
